Tierra Patagonia Celebrates the Traditions of Torres del Paine
Tierra Patagonia took center stage at the iconic 'Fiesta a la Chilena' event in January.
Part of the unique experience at Tierra Hotels is connecting with nature in new ways, ways you never have before. This is especially true at Tierra Patagonia when you start to take in the surroundings, where connection, and disconnection from daily life, is inevitable. Our excursions are designed to get to know the area in a deep way, and this also includes, if you’re lucky, getting to know the fauna of the area up close, specifically the curious foxes that often turn up to see what’s going on.
In Chile we have our own endemic fox species, such as the culpeo (Lycalopex culpaeus) and the chilla (Lycalopex griseus); both can be found throughout the country, and, therefore, at Tierra Patagonia as well.
The culpeo fox or red fox, as it is widely called, is unique in the world. With a weight of 12 kilograms (26 pounds) and a size between 80 and 120 cm (31 to 47 inches), this solitary and nocturnal canid is usually found in open places, where it hunts and feeds, and in temperate forests, which it prefers for hiding and resting.
Unlike the red one, the chilla fox, or grey fox, is smaller, measuring only between 40 and 60 cm (15 to 24 inches), with a maximum weight of 6 kilograms (13 pounds).
Although it shares nocturnal and solitary behaviors with the red fox, the chilla fox enjoys environments such as the steppe and open bushes, although it prefers small bushes and streams for refuge.
Venture into Tierra Patagonia and get to know its surroundings and history, while experiencing the immensity of the southernmost area of the planet.
